Rice Brewing Sisters Club

The Rice Brewing Sisters Club continues their ongoing research connecting the ecology of gelidium (seaweed) with the labor of haenyeo, women divers who harvest it by hand.

In Nagano, Japan, there are small factories that process gelidium from Jeju’s sea into agar.

During the Japanese colonial period, Korean agar factories learned this processing technique, one such factory still remains in Miryang, which has a similar natural environment to Nagano.

Haenyeo Lee Jeong-ok from Busan and Michiko, an ama (woman diver) from Kanezaki Village, Japan, both described the same “whitening” phenomenon, where the coastal rocks turn pale due to deteriorating marine environments. In the Magang area of Taiwan, Chen Wang-shi (aged 83), a veteran haenyeo, collects gelidium before June and hand-harvests seaweed until March. Gelidium is a red algae that grows in deep waters, traditionally gathered by women divers.

During her residency at Pier 2, Son Hye-min is visiting local haenyeo communities, conducting interviews, and studying the ecology of gelidium, exploring how different seas are connected through people’s lives and hands. Even when the oceans are far apart, human lives remain intertwined through shared touch and labor.
